The Heart of Embodiment is an Inner Knowing of Self, an ability to be Present to what is in this moment, with all that we are: body, mind, emotion, energy, soul, spirit.

Through the personal experience and consciousness of each tissue, fiber, cell of our being, we learn about who we are. We trust our inner knowing and wisdom, of what we need, to heal, to be comfortable, to be whole. Our purpose of being becomes clear.

Somatic practices can help us in this process of embodiment. A key principle to embodiment is the inner sensory process, facilitated through movement, touch, voice, imagining.

The word "somatic" (Greek "somatikos", soma: “living, aware, bodily person”) means pertaining to the body, experienced and regulated from within. In the 1970’s, somatic pioneer Thomas Hanna first coined the word somatics, as the study of self from the perspective of one’s lived experience, encompassing the dimensions of body, psyche, and spirit.

The field of somatics has developed over the last century through a process of inquiry into how consciousness inhabits the living body.

“My inmost belief is that, just as anatomy has helped us to get an intimate knowledge of the working of the body, and neuroanatomy an understanding of some activities of the psyche, so will understanding of the somatic aspects of consciousness enable us to know ourselves more intimately.”
Moshe Feldenkrais, Founder of the Feldenkrais® Method

“The movement of mind through thought, emotion, sensation, feeling, creativity, awareness, and relationship, follows the same pathways as physical movement…. There is something in nature that forms patterns. We, as part of nature, also form patterns. The mind is like the wind and the body like the sand... If you want to know how the wind is blowing, look at the sand.”
Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, Founder of Body-Mind Centering®

"I recommend the Feldenkrais Method to patients whose movement has been restricted by injury, cerebral palsy, stroke, fibromyalgia or chronic pain…I also believe that the Feldenkrais Method can help all of us feel more comfortable in our bodies."
Andrew Weil, MD, Bestselling author of Spontaneous Healing
